This is it, my swan song as Commodore. I'm excited to welcome our new executive and your new Commodore Bos Malcolm to the Executive and Flag Ranks.
A big thank you to departing Flag Officers; Frank Shoemaker, Terry McFarlane and our membership chair Darrel Haines. It has been a pleasure working with everyone and I look forward to my year as "Past Commodore".
We'll miss Jenny as our Fleet Captain but she'll be active as our new Vice Commodore. Welcome to Ian Waymark as our new Fleet Captain, he comes with lots of experience planning events for the Power Squadron. Also, welcome to Sylvie Gendreau as our new Membership Chair and Doug Cunnian as our new Treasurer.
A big thanks as well to everyone in the club for making my two years as Commodore rewarding and fun. We've had great member involvment in our cruises and in all our social events and when Kerry and I are cruising we are very proud to fly our burgee.
Cheers & have a great holiday season,

Fleet Captain's Report

Hi there fellow members,

As our cruising and boating season draws to a close at the end of this month, I just want to say what a pleasure it has been to have served the club in the capacity of Fleet Captain for the past four years.   The support was fantastic and I sure had fun.  Thank you.  Please give your new Fleet Captain the same support you extended me.  I know he/she will do a great job.

For our last event of the year, the Lighted Boat Parade, I want to encourage all of you to come on out, decorate your boats with LED Christmas lights and join in the fun. Canadian Tire sell LED lights thatrun off tiny little Solar panels and yes, they do work -I used them last year even with the snow storm and bad weather.  If you are unable to bring your boat for this final event, please bring friends and come down and watch.    Silva Bay will have hot chocolate and mulled wine available.  If you wish a meal, I would suggest that you book in advance.  I believe they have a function later that evening.

Members wishing moorage for the night of the 12th, please let me know and I will book a spot for you.   There will be a one off special rate of $10 flat per boat and $5.00 for power plus tax for our members.    We will congregate at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club's outer dock with Thetis being closest to the Shipyard Rock side.  Others may line up at the dock (starboard tie) behind Thetis until we have everyone there.   Please be there by 5.45 p.m. as we will start the Parade at 6 p.m. sharp from the RVYC dock.   We will circumnavigate Silva Bay four times and for those who have GPS, if you chart the first loop around the bay, it will be easier to follow your course for the others.   Graeme and I will be going around the bay during the day to plot the course in advance, so if you make sure that you follow the boat in front of you, then all should be well.   Thetis will have a large star hanging from the back of the radar arch so it will be an easy beacon for the boat behind.  Depending on numbers coming, there may or may not be a particular order.

So folks, please let me know soonest if you are planning to participate in the parade.   If you haven't seen this before, it really is a beautiful sight and the music great.

Looking forward to hearing from you and an advanced "COMPLIMENTS OF THE SEASON TO ONE AND ALL"

Cheers,
Jenny Ireland

Did you know?
The term "Cut and Run" now means the cutting of one's losses and getting out but it does have nautical origins.

Most often thought to mean the cutting of an anchor line in an effort to make a quick getaway. Hard to imagine that many ship's masters enjoyed routinely losing an anchor or two, so it is probably more likely referring to the practice of securing the sails of a square-rigged ship with rope yarns that could easily be cut away when a quick departure was necessary.

If a captain of a smaller ship encountered a larger enemy vessel, he might decide that discretion is the better part of valor, and so he would order the crew to cut the lashings on all the sails and run away before the wind. Other sources indicate "Cut and Run" meant to cut the anchor cable and sail off in a hurry.

Historian's Report
From Files of 2004

Our Commodore was Vic Dowling; Past Commodore was Doug Harrison while Marijke Oudshoorn held the Secretary post. Don McLaughlin was Treasurer; Anchorline Editor was Jean Grove while Cora Klardie was Rear Commodore. Wendy Hobbs was Historian. Alan Brunt was Vice Commodore and Members at Large were Sietse Visser and Fred Withey.  Membership chairperson was Fred Withey.

Current officers that are still members of the club are Doug Harrison, Wendy Hobbs, Sietse Visser, Vic Dowling and Fred Withey.

There were 50 memberships when the log was published in April. The log also showed a total of 37 boats in our club, 13 power and 24 sail. By the end of 2004 we had 56 memberships after starting the year with 35.

2004 was a rebuilding year for SBYC. As was mentioned in the March 2009 Anchorline under FILES FROM OTHER YEARS 2003, the year ended on a sour note when the November AGM found no members willing to run for Commodore, Vice Commodore or Fleet Captain. An emergency meeting was later held with five members present at which Vic Dowling agreed to be Commodore, Alan Brunt would take Vice Commodore and Fred Withey would assume Membership. These appointments were later confirmed at an executive meeting in Dec. It was the first year of net gains in membership after several years of losing more members than were joining. That gain in membership has carried on to the present where we now have well over 100 memberships and we continue to grow.

Some of our current members who are now playing or have played a large part in the running of our club and who joined in 2004 are; Ralph & Helen Hagen, Frank & June Shoemaker, Jerrie & Terry MacFarlane, Don & Val Spears, Chris Boulsbee & Marilyn Campbell and Russ & Elaine Pearce.
