Commodore's Report

What a great year 2010 has been for our Club! So many cruises and social events filled our leisure time, both out on the water and on the land. So many memories of friends and strangers getting together to have fun, to discover and to celebrate our lives in this unique and beautiful place we call home. How fortunate we are! As your outgoing Commodore, I want to thank our Club’s talented Executive team and volunteers for doing such an outstanding job managing our resources and pulling all the pieces together on your behalf. We would be much less effective as a Club, were it not for all of their volunteered time and efforts. It has been a pleasure for me to work with them . Thanks also to all the Members of our Club for your participation in our varied activities and for making our Club such a lively and fun group to be a part of.

Looking ahead towards 2011, your new Executive is already planting the seeds for yet another fun filled eventful year. I urge you to continue to support and be an active part of all that is planned, so that we will continue to flourish. Upon reflecting back over this year and the challenges that once lay ahead, it is comforting to see the results and to know that our Club is in such good hands.

Both Margaret and I wish to take this opportunity to extend to you and your family best wishes for the upcoming festive Holiday Season. May you, your family and friends, all have cause to celebrate this special Holiday time.

Safe Boating to you all!
Bos Malcolm

Fleet Captain's Report

Our cruising year is rapidly concluding. You are all aware that the threat of blowing snow, heavy rain and gale force winds would not deter an SBYC member form attending a cruise. However, all of the above did force the Ladysmith Light Up committee to postpone the event until Dec. 2. I had no choice but to cancel the cruise for this year. Yes, I would have said  "nogo" on account of weather, but is nice to give somebody else the responsibility!
The Photo Contest is now concluded, I do have the prizes and I do have the winners. I hope you attend the AGM on Nov. 30 to see the winners and their prize winning photos.
Our final "on the water" event for 2010  is the Lighted Boat Event at Silva Bay. The evening will commence at 1730 with a dinner in the pub for those who wish to join us. At 1900 we will head to the boats in the Silva Bay Marina and proceed to light up our boats. We will stay on the boats, enjoy a happy hour (with some non-alcoholic wine), and at 2000 we will leave the lights on and proceed back to the pub where Tammy will warm us up with a complimentary mulled wine. By the time you have a mulled wine in your hand I will know who has been judged as the best "lighted" boat and a prize certificate from Silva Bay Shipyard will be awarded.
I do need to give Jenny numbers for the docks and Tammy numbers for dinner so please let me know if you plan to attend.
As we conclude the 2010 season we must open the 2011 season. Please mark Jan. 2 on your calendar for the "Salute the Compass" cruise. Doug Cunnian will be the cruise director for this cruise, so all you power boaters will have to follow a sailboat this year as you drink a toast for fair winds and calm seas.
I say "Thank you" to all of you who took part in our cruises this year. It is your smiling faces on the water, at anchor or on the dock that makes being part of the SBYC executive a very rewarding position.
I wish you all a Happy Festive Season,
Ian Waymark

Good day everyone!

It hasn’t been a month since Halloween and it already looks like Christmas!

We did not get any new members in the past month and very slowly members are renewing the dues.  Still, the bulk is yet to come.  Dues, in the amount of $55 and don’t forget the $10 for Marine Parks,  are due by December 31st.  Do yourself an early Christmas present and renew your dues right away!  I will be at the AGM, November 30th with cards, so please bring your cheques or cash and I will give you your cards on the spot.   Otherwise please mail your renewal along with any change of address, e-mail address, boat name, etc. to Box 154, Gabriola, B.C. V0R 1X1 c/o Sylvie.

You will also be able to see me at the light up of the boats at Silva Bay on December 11th.

I think I am making your renewal of your fees very easy this year so please don’t be late be happy!

Literally, eating the seaman's daily ration of tough, salt-cured pork or beef. Long before refrigeration, cured meats were tough but durable and it took a lot of chewing to make them edible.
