Commodore's Report

What an exciting time it is for our Club and for me as your incoming Commodore for 2010. Special thanks go to Jordan, Jenny and the rest of our capable executive for a job especially well done. Wasn't it just a few short years ago that serious consideration was being given to closing the Club for lack of interest and momentum?. Thanks to the dedication of many, that has now all changed. Your enthusiasm and participation in all that our Club is doing has made a big difference and for that reason and others, we hope to continue to prosper. I look forward to working with our new executive and all of you to insure that we continue to enjoy our special times both out on the water and here on Gabriola as members of the Silva Bay Yacht Club.
Seasons greetings and best wishes for the New Year!

Fleet Captain's Report

Happy New Year to You All
As your new Fleet Captain, I must first say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”.  Jenny Ireland has given you a full and varied cruising schedule for the past four years and I intend to follow suit.

My first action, as Fleet Captain (elect), was to call a meeting of five SBYC members who have taken part in numerous cruises. Darrel & Jill Haines, Doug & Deb Cunnian and Rick Schultze. The agenda was to hammer out a tentative cruise schedule which is now available on our web site.  I say thank you to these five members who helped put this schedule together.

My second action was a short survey to all members inviting comments from each of you on what you would like to see in future cruises.  Your responses helped me tailor the cruise schedule to meet those comments. We will have more “anchoring” cruises but will not miss out on docks or buoys if you are new to cruising. Hence, we are at Montague at least three times. We will have a “dress up” cruise. That means “almost formal” (iron those jeans) when we cross the pond and go to “Bridges” on Granville Island. Weekend cruises will spend a Saturday in a location that can be reached by those members who still “work” and must depart Gabriola on a Saturday. All cruises can easily be extended by an early start (on Friday) or by a late departure (on Monday or whenever).  We will have our Happy Hours and our Potlucks but will try to not sink the dock with an overabundance of food and wine.

At present, there are 15 boats and 52 members and guests signed up for our first cruise of 2010 “Salute the Compass” and the brunch at Silva Bay Pub. If  I receive that response for all of our cruises we are going to have a very busy year!

Paddy and I, on ‘Shavasan’, look forward to seeing you on the water.

Safe Boating

Did you know?
The term "Turning a blind eye" now means to ignore something intentionally.

In 1801, during the Battle of Copenhagen, Admiral Nelson deliberately held his telescope to his blind eye, in order not to see the flag signal from the commander to stop the bombardment. He won.

Historian's Report
Another year has passed and once again I’m the Club Historian. This is one of those jobs that you can have for life if you wish. There’s no election to the post. It’s generally accepted that if you don’t resign you’re automatically back in. I think Wendy Hobbs held the position for most of years that the club was in existence prior to a couple of years ago when I offered to take the position, if Wendy wanted to retire. It took Wendy about 3 seconds to take my offer. The previous four years I had held the position of Membership Chairperson and felt that it was time to move on. Of course Darrel Haines took on that position and did a fantastic job. He’s now retired and Sylvie Gendreau is in charge of membership.

As many of you know our club was founded in 1977 although we weren’t chartered until 1978. Our first Commodore was Ron Stratton who held the position for two years. He passed away some years back and his wife Laura lived in a nursing home in Kelowna before passing away this year. Of the original charter members, only Dave & Wendy Hobbs and Arnie & Judy Bentzen are still members. Dave & Wendy of course live on the Island and are active members while Arnie & Judy live in Friday Harbour in the San Juan Islands. They do occasionally drop by when in our area.

This year I hope to get an archive set up, where we can preserve our records and pictures that we’ve accumulated over the years. Our new Commodore Bos is very interested in seeing this get done. Although since I’ve been the Historian, I’ve been gathering up as much of these materials as I can, there still are some years that we have very few records from. Former Commodore Andre Lemieux has offered to play a big part in this as it appears that the best way to preserve these records is to get them onto our website which would make them available to our membership. Andre is very good when it comes to understanding computers. Bos has asked me to make up a report to be presented at the January executive meeting, as to how this can all be accomplished. I expect to work on this once the holiday is over.
