Commodore's Report

Before you know it the first day of Spring will be here and we'll all be getting a tan on our boats! Kerry & I missed the Valentine's Cruise but all had a great time at the brunch and kudos to those brave souls who took their boats, it was a bit rough. We were in Vancouver meeting with our boys, one of whom had a birthday. We were fortunate to have tickets to a Canucks game, they were playing Calgary! Boy, are those fans ever brutal to the Calgary team and the Calgary fans. It was dangerous wearing flames "red" that night. Thank goodness the Canucks won or there might have been a brawl!
The Commodore's Ball is coming up quickly, see below for your invitation to attend. This annual event is always a great party and this year we are having it specially catered by Robert's. Bobby Smith is back to entertain us. The Ball is only a few days off from St. Pat's day so lets look at this year's Ball as an excuse to party "green". St. Pat's day is special for Kerry & I as it is our anniversary, 28 years this year (I think?).
This is also the event that our annual trophies are awarded; Sailpast honours for both sail and power, the Cruising trophy, Seamanship trophy, Membership trophy and the coveted "Off Course Compensator's Award". This trophy is awarded to the member or members who executed the greatest nautical faux pas of the year. This trophy is awarded the evening of the ball based upon your nominations. The nomination with the greatest "applause" wins. This award is so coveted that two past commodores have won in recent years!
Look forward to seeing you at the Ball, be sure to book your tickets on-line,

Safe Boating,
Jordan

Fleet Captain's Report

It is the end of February and three cruises have come and gone. The Sizzling Soup Cruise was a great success with 11 boats and 34 members attending. The cruise hit a weather window with a respite from the wind and rain that allowed our members to enjoy a day on the water, good company and plenty of hot soup. Thank you to Rick Schultze for being the Cruise Director.
The Valentine’s Day Cruise did not fair well with the weather but there was still a good turnout for the cruise. I know at least 28 members and 3 boats attended. All the ladies received roses and judging by the photos of smiling faces everyone left happy and well fed. Thank you to Jerry Ellins for being the Cruise Director and for buying and presenting the roses Photographs of both cruises can be seen on the SBYC website.
Our next cruise is the All Fools’ Cruise on April 1, to Thetis. This cruise will offer a prize to the SBYC member who is able to get away with the very best April Fools’ prank. There are very few rules to this “competition”. The number one rule is laughter, but remember, those who laugh last, laugh best.
At Thetis, you will have your choice of docking or anchoring out. There will be a happy hour & a pot luck on Saturday night. The All Fools’ Cruise is a few weeks away but get in early
by signing up on the SBYC web page under “Cruises & Events”
At this time I do not have a Cruise Director for the cruise, if you can help out please let me know.
Enjoy the Commodore’s Ball on March 19.
Safe Boating,
Ian Waymark

Good day all!

Incredible but February is over!  We are looking at longer days and it seems that I can see an end to the winter.  Nice to see the sun!

What is incredible as well is the 27 members that still have not paid their dues!  For $55 a year where else would you get a multitudes of reciprocals, many outings with the club, BBQ’s & fun throughout the year!  Why delay, just pay!

Brought up Short
Being "Brought up Short" can mean a sudden change of fortune or circumstance. It comes from when a sailing ship underway could only be brought to an emergency standstill by dropping the anchors. Not a pleasant experience.
