NEW - Summer cruise to the Broughtons

Finally a burst of great Spring weather is upon us as is the exciting prospect of all that lies ahead for our cruising this Summer. Now is the time to insure that your boat is ship shape and preventative maintenance has been done, before you get out to cruise and enjoy this magnificent coastal area. The official start of our boating season is marked by Sailpast which is planned for Saturday May 29th. This event dates back to the earliest beginnings of Naval Traditions specifically to ancient Greece for the Sailpast of Troy. The Fleet of 1000 ships and 100,000 men took two years to prepare and assemble at the Port of Aulis in Northeastern Greece for inspection by Helen of Troy. Thus the origin of the saying that "Helen of Troy had the face that launched 1000 ships." Make sure that you and your troops plan to join us at Pages Marina for all the fun activities. Fleet Captain Ian Waymark will soon be posting the details for you regarding the program for the day including the ships protocol, BBQ and Marine Garage sale. Our May business meeting was the last of the season and your Program Director Bert Terhart has some interesting speakers lined up for the fall. We look forward to seeing you on May 29th though unlike our Greek ancients prepare yourselves for a great fun time both on the land and seas.

Mark your calendar for the coming cruises:
May 14-15-16
Pre-Summer Cruise to Montague Marine Park and Glenthorne Passage. We will have a happy hour and pot luck on Friday night with club wine. Skippers will have their choice of docking (if space is available) mooring buoy or anchor. Saturday will see us in Glenthorne Passage on anchor. Happy hour and pot lucks will be casual and arranged between boats. There will be a crab catching competition with a prize to the largest crab caught. David will be the "unbiased" judge but he tells me wine may influence his bias, and his ability to measure crabs. Sign on by return e-mail or by calling me at 250 247 7883.
I look forward to seeing you on the water.
June 4-5-6
Our "On The Hook Cruise" to Princess Bay, Wallace Island (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/wallace/ ). Something new here, for many of you and for your Fleet Captain. You will have to anchor and stern tie. Not to worry, we will call on the experts for advice. Bring a sound anchor and a long line for your stern tie. Princess Bay is a great spot for a blind dinghy race, so some more prizes, one prize for the first dinghy across the finish line and a prize for the best decorated brown paper bag over the rowers head.
A pot luck, a happy hour, some club wine, what more could you ask for? let me know, e-mail or phone.
Looking ahead. July 30- Aug 2.
"Across the Pond" for the finale of the "Celebration of Light". Come and see the fireworks, join us at a fancy restaurant (a crease in your jeans please), explore False Creek and cross Georgia Strait in good company. I have 18 berths reserved at False Creek Marina (http://www.falsecreek.com/) and 13 are spoken for, don't wait, let me know. On the way home we tuck into Snug Cove on Bowen Island an enjoy a latte before happy hour.
That is enough for now, check the revised cruise schedule coming out shortly.

Clean Slate
A slate tablet was kept near the helm on which the watch keeper would record the speeds, distances, headings and tacks during the watch. If there were no problems during the watch, the slate would be wiped clean so that the new watch could start over with a clean slate.
Prior to GPS and onboard computers, courses and distances were recorded on a slate. At the end of each watch these were transcribed into the ship's log and the slate wiped clean for the next watch.

GRADUATION CRUISE
Hello to you all.
Our spring boating class training cruise has come and gone. A big thank you to Ralph Hagen for being the skipper/instructor on Owikeno. If any of you have any photos from that cruise please pass them onto me.
Please mark your calendars for our next cruise on May 8. It is our annual "Graduation Cruise" when we celebrate the success of the students from the boating class. Our destination is Dinghy Dock Pub in Nanaimo Harbour.
All Power squadron members are welcome, as are your guests and friends.
The currents at Gabriola Passage are as follows:
1100 hours 3.5 knots flood Tide 8'
1500 hours 2.5 knots ebb Tide 11'
We do not have the tides with us in either direction but the currents should not present problems and there will be ample water in False Narrows in both directions.
I have booked Dinghy Dock for 1230 hours. Dinghy Dock reserves tables for us and we order from the regular menu.
Please let me know if you plan to attend. If you are a skipper and would like a guest or two please let me know and if you are boatless and would like a ride, please let me know. You can also attend via the MV Quinsam and the protection Island ferry.
Looking ahead, July 3 is our annual Corn and Strawberry shortcake "cruise", and we will be having a wine tour/cullinary cruise on June 18, 19 & 20 in Cowichan Bay. Information on those cruises to follow shortly.
I look forward to seeing you all on the cruises,
Safe boating,

STRAWBERRY & CORN CRUISE
The annual Strawberry cake and corn cruise will be held on July 3 at Newcastle Island. We were "blown" out last year and had our picnic at Pages Marina. I have secured the day use picnic site on the water at Newcastle Island and there should be ample dock space to take our boats. At 1030 hours we will have an ebbing tide of about 2 knots in Gabriola Passage and10+ feet of water in False Narrows. On our return we will have a flooding current at Gabriola Passage of 4+ knots and 8 feet of water in False Narrows. If the winds are calm we can easily go on the outside of Gabriola.
To get an idea of where we are going look at the following website <http://www.newcastleisland.ca/.> Paddy and I will be staying overnight and invite other boaters to join us. Newcastle Island has some lovely hikes so mark your calendar, let me know your coming, invite family and friends and join us as we nosh on fresh corn on the cob and finish up with strawberry flan and whipped cream.
You can join us by boat or by ferry. As with our graduation cruise, if you are a skipper and woulds like a passenger or two please let me know. If you wish to attend and do not have a boat let me know and I will try to secure a "ride" for you.
I will send more information as each of you sign on.
This cruise is replacing "Little Italy", originally planned for July 3 but turning out to be a little on the expensive side.
While you are marking your calendar, also mark the weekend of June 18, 19 and 20 for our annual wine cruise to the Cowichan Valley with the addition of a culinary cruise to Fairburn Farms for those of you who wish to expand your cooking skills in your boat galley. Information on that cruise to follow tomorrow.
I look forward to hearing from you.
