Welcome to Fall everyone. We had some great weather this September and the Star Spangled cruisers to the south are all back really enjoyed their time in the American waters. See above for a link to some pictures.
Ian has a great cruise planned to Wallace Island coming up. Wallace is one of our favourites. For those who know, there is a hut just off Conover Cove filled with driftwood momentos. See if you can find "Sounder's" driftwood and take a pic!
Bert Terhart travelled off the west coast of Vancouver Island and will be giving us a talk at our first meeting of the fall season this coming Tuesday October 4th. We're trying a new location, the Haven on Davis Road. All you Power Squadroners know this well. A great facility and is in keeping with the club's desire to support area businesses.
Here is a great club story. In July I received a call from club members Mark & Shawn Titterton who were cruising north to Tribune Bay with a friend in a sailboat when the friend noticed their dinghy was no longer behind their sailboat. Between VHF, cell & email club members Regan & Sylvie retrieved the dinghy off Protection Island and returned it to them the following day!
Just a little techie news for you as well. Did you know how some websites have better rankings than others? Most of it is based upon how it is found or "googled". You can book mark our website or better yet, google it. "SBYC" or "Silva Bay" will find us and the more you google, the higher ranking we have!
Hope to see you on the water,
Happy & Safe Cruising

As I type my Fleet Captain's summer report I know the boats are just returning from the Star Spangled Cruise. Doug and Deb Cunnian have kept me up to date on the cruise and I can report everybody has had a great 3 weeks on the water. I know the cruise finished up with an "awards" dinner and a champagne breakfast the following morning. A more complete report, with photos, will follow in my next report.
The first cruise of the summer was the Cowichan Bay Boat Festival Cruise. Due to events beyond our control, the Boat Festival was cancelled but the organizers of the festival looked after us and the cruise became a wine tour of some local wineries. The tour was followed by a bar-b-q that made us realize how welcome we were. The next morning was the annual Father's Day pancake breakfast and I think all the boats departed just a bit lower in the water.
July 2 saw many of us on "D" dock to celebrate Canada Day. The "D' dock crew did them selves proud. We wore our Canada Day colours, we ate a great barb-q- lunch and many of you won some wonderful prizes:-).
The Mystery Cruise. What can I say? Everybody found there way to the right place, Ladysmith. One person, unnamed at this point, even found his way using a Power Squadron student chart. Happy Hour was great as was the pot luck dinner and the entire event was made even better by the Ladysmith volunteers completing the social dock in time for us to make use of it.
Chemainus. As usual, the Chemainus Dinner/theatre cruise was well attended. The dinner was superb and everyone enjoyed the presentation of "Fiddler on the Roof".
The Celebration of Light Cruise to Vancouver had good attendance and the members had fair seas and kind winds as they crossed the strait. I do know the club wine was consumed so it would be fair to say a good time was had by all.
The last cruise, "Sipping on the Dock" in Genoa Bay was truly a relaxing cruise. The weather was great, the evenings warm and the Genoa Bay staff made us feel truly welcome. The sipping consisted of a wine tasting event where we each scored wines on numerous points such as colour, bouquet, taste etc. The first few "sips" received detailed reports but as more wine was consumed rather than "sipped" the reports became less detailed and just a bit harder to read. Legibility was not a problem, only because the judge, Doug Cunnian, had also been doing considerable "tasting". All in all, the best wines won, I think, and Ted, David and Russ & Elaine won the prizes.
It was a good summer on the water.
Coming up is the Golf the Gulf Cruise on the Sept 24th weekend, The Fall Cruise to Wallace Island on the Oct. 1st weekend, the Chemainus Theatre presentation of Amadeus on Oct 22 & 23, The Ladysmith Light up Cruise on Nov. 24, 25 and our own lighted boat parade on Dec. 10.
I hope you have all had a good summer and look forward to seeing you on the water this fall and at our monthly luncheons.
Good day everyone!
Amazing, it’s September and another summer is coming to an end. I hope everyone had a great time and while we were enjoying the great weather we have received few applications for new membership in the club.
I would like to mention that if you want to sponsor a new member please make sure that they will meet the requisites before you let people send their application. At this point in time Siva Bay Yacht Club is only accepting new members if they have property or they are living on Gabriola and the surrounding Islands (Mudge Island, Flat Tops, Decourcy, Link & Roxton). Vancouver, lower main land & Vancouver Island residents would therefore not be accepted. So please keep this important information in mind and it will save you some disappointments in the future.
Otherwise the summer brought us,
Ken & Tia Vaughn aboard their Vessel Tuggerknot and
David & Nancy Van Wyck with their Vessel Ashley Margaret, a 22’ power boat.
Welcome to Silva Bay Yacht Club!
Please make sure that you e-mail me with any changes you might have in order to keep our registry up to date. The following is a notice for the sun seekers! You must be already starting your preparations to escape the upcoming winter land of B.C. to your favorite sunny spot somewhere in the tropics.
I would like to remind you that it would be great if you could look after your membership fees, which are due by December 31st. Please make your cheque postdate if you would like and I will have your membership cards to you before your great escape! If you do not have cheques the club also accept cash. J
Let me know if you would like me to meet with you or you will be mailing your cheque. I will also be available at the next SBYC meeting on Oct 4th at the Haven 7:30 pm.
Happy Boating!
