Commodore's Report

With winter seemingly in abeyance this year, we have got our cruising season off to an early start. Special thanks to Fleet Captain Ian Waymark for his efforts while away travelling particularly for arranging details for our successful Valentine's day Dinghy Pub Newcastle Island cruise. The Commodore's Ball also was a quality event with good food, music and lots of fun, especially the awards and trophy presentations. My thanks to all that attended and to those that handled the details in your behalf. Looking ahead we have lots of other interesting speakers, cruises and events planned, so do check out our website often to keep informed and to get the most out of your Club's calendar of events.
Happy cruising,
Bos

Fleet Captain's Report

After co-winning a very prestigious award at the  SBYC's Commodore's Ball you can now have full confidence in your Fleet Captain and Cruise Master, but be warned, I will be watching you all and taking notes so you too might be a winner.

I am looking ahead to two of our summer cruises. On June 18, 19, 20 & 21. The Gabriola Power Squadron will be having their second Wine Cruise & Tour to Cowichan Bay. This year the cruise is also offering a "Culinary Cruise" at the same time and place. The wine tour portion of the cruise will see our members touring up to four wineries in the Cowichan Valley and having a lunch included in the tour. The culinary portion of the cruise will see 10 of our members attending a cooking class at Fairburn Farms in the Cowichan Valley. Go to this web site for information on Fairburn Farms www.fairburnfarm.bc.ca/cooking-classes.htm. Mara, of Fairburn Farms has up together a special menu, just for boaters. Click here to see what can be done in a small galley.

The cost of each tour is $99 per person and the Gabriola Power Squadron extends an invitation to all SBYC members and their families for this cruise.

I am discussing this tour now only because all bookings must be made early to secure the tour bus and the kitchen at Fairburn Farms. At this time I only ask you to express and interest in either tour. I do not need commitments for a few weeks. The Cullinary Cruise has two members booked at this time. The June 18, 19, 20 & 21 time period also involves Father's Day and the longest day of the year, just two more reasons for a good weekend on the water with good company, good food and good wine.

In looking ahead to a third cruise this summer I must mention the "Cross the Pond" Cruise on July 30, 31, Aug. 1 & 2. I had booked 6 spaces at False Creek Marina but they quickly filled and I have now booked 6 more spaces. The "Cross the Pond" cruise will involve a dinner at a fine restaurant on the Vancouver waterfront (for those who wish to attend) and will also include a spectacular view of one of the nights of the Symphony of Fire in English Bay. Present plans are to depart early Friday morning to catch the calm seas and to make our way home via Snug Cove on Bowen Island. Some of our members will then go north for a private Cruise to the Broughton's (more on that cruise to come) while the rest of us head back to Gabriola.  I mention this cruise now only because all Vancouver Marinas fill up very quickly, starting in March and I wish to get our booking in while there is plenty of space. Again, no commitment at this time but an expression of intent would be appreciated.

This e-mail contains a lot of information so please feel free to get back to me with any questions.

Safe Boating
Ian Waymark, Fleet Captain, Silva Bay Yacht Club.

SILVA BAY YACHT CLUB
St. Patricks Day Bash, Saturday March 20th
Hi Everyone,
As you know last year we had the St. Patrick's Day bash at Silva Bay Pub instead of cruising to Thetis Island.  Ian has arranged for this to happen again at Silva Bay on the 20th March with Bobby Smith once again entertaining us.  So we have a great evening of fun, laughter, singing etc., in store.
As Ian is still away for the time being, and because Silva Bay requires numbers in advance, I have agreed to contact everyone.   So folks, put on the green, make sure your throats are well-oiled (for singing of course!) and come down and share in the Irish shenanigans once again - it will be a blast.   If you missed it last year, be sure not to do so this year.  Have a look at the pics from the Website on last year's St. Paddy's night (on the main menu, go to Past Events and scroll down to St. Pat's Pub Night 2009).   This has traditionally been one of the most popular events of the year.
The menu will be the regular pub menu with an added dish of Irish stew.   And who knows, perhaps Green beer...........!
Please let me know as soon as possible if you plan to attend (it would be great if you could let me know one way or the other), so that I can give Ian, Bos and Silva Bay a heads up on numbers.
Thanks and Cheers,
Jenny Ireland
Vice Commodore

Did you know?
The phrase"Carry On".
In the days of sail, the officer of the deck kept a weather eye constantly on the slightest change in the wind so sail could be reefed or added as necessary to ensure the fastest headway. Whenever a good breeze came along, the order to 'carry on' would be given. It meant to hoist every bit of canvas the yards could carry.
Today, the term means to continue with your work.

Historian's Report
From Files of 2001

Our Commodore was Lynn Coleman; Past Commodore was Brian Sutton while Don Pearce held the Secretary post. Don McLaughlin was Treasurer; Anchorline Editors were Sietse & Diane Visser while Mike Richards was Vice Commodore. Wendy Hobbs was Historian. Chris Szalla was Fleet Captain and Jacquie Sutton was Staff Captain. Members at Large were Cora Klardie & Allan Prior. Membership chairperson was June Pearce.  Chris Szalla & Don Pearce looked after the Log and Jacquie Sutton headed the phoning committee.
Of that group the following who are still members of the club are Wendy Hobbs, Sietse & Diane Visser, Vic Dowling, Mike Richards & Lynn Coleman.
There were 44 memberships when the log was published in April. The log also showed a total of 34 boats in our club, 9 power and 25 sail.
Unfortunately not a lot of information, other than what is posted above, is available about 2001. This accentuates the need for a proper archive to be set up as most of the data from that year seems to be lost. Once again I would ask that if anyone has minutes or other documents from 2001, please let me know and I’ll pick them up and include them with our record.

Memories of a 2010 Olympic Volunteer
I was a volunteer at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as a “Press Assistant” in the Main Press Centre downtown. Eighteen shifts from January through to the close of the Olympics on February 28. Just a few days before my last shift, I was given a pin by a Vancouver Sun reporter in trade for an “Olympic moment”.  Not just “a” moment but “the” Olympic moment. That is like asking a boater which part of the water he likes best, a seamstress her best individual stitch, a waiter his all time favourite customer or a hockey player their best puck. (Had enough?)
My wife accused me of getting “emotional” during the opening ceremonies. I did and I don’t very often. The Sea Bus I took every day to my friend’s house where I was staying would surprise me often. Kids playing 70’s dance music one day had everyone that was standing “bopping” to the music. If I looked tired at the end of the day, all dressed in my Smurf blue, I would get offered someone’s seat on the bus, because I was a volunteer.  A journalist named Sven broke me up. Not able to read someone’s accreditation at the help desk we would ask “and where are you from?”  He replied,” I’m Sven from Sveden.”  OK, maybe a lame play on words but we were all so giddy with Olympic happiness.
Most people just wanted to be there to be a part of the Olympics. A young family went over one day from the North Shore and on chatting I asked if they had tickets or a destination in mind. They didn’t, they just wanted to go and be there and being there was downtown Vancouver.
I enjoyed meeting people from all over the world who were there to cheer on their athletes.  And who knew there were so many Canadian flags in Canada. If a home or apartment didn’t have a flag; their car, jersey or children did.
I did get emotional one more time. I watched Clara Hughes skate to a bronze in the women’s 5000 meter speed skating. Afterwards at the press conference I learned that this wonderful woman is 37 years old and she competed with many almost ½ her age. But also that this was the last event professionally she will be competing in. I guess I got emotional for the sacrifices this woman gave to her sport and to all of us Canadians and that we will truly miss her. She did say she planned on going kayaking with her husband and to learn how to “roll it over”, I think she’ll be great at it!
So thanks for the pin, hope you like my memories.
