February 2012 Anchorline I thought we had done an admirable job of appeasing the sailing gods at our Salute the Compass event at Silva Bay Pub on January 2nd. Apparently not as our Fleet Captain Jill had to first postpone then entirely cancel the Soup Cruise to Pirate’s Cove due to two weekends of nasty weather. Here’s hoping the gods got all that out of their system now and our typical fair sailing weather returns and no more cruises get cancelled. With the days starting to get noticeably longer, I’m sure many of us are beginning to think about getting back on the boat. While modern gear and equipment has made boating much easier and safer than in the past, there is Some members have expressed some confusion and uncertainty as to the requirements needed for someone to become a new member of SBYC. The requirements are set out in out bylaws (which you can find at the back of the SBYC log book) which in essence states that preference will be given to new members who reside or have property on Gabriola Island. Anyone else who applies has their application referred to the executive for consideration. We are (by far) the least expensive yacht club in BC to belong to and some people in the past have seen this as a cheap way to get reciprocal moorage at other yacht clubs. That is not in our interest as we are a club and want members who can and will participate in club activities and events and therefore have a stake in our club. The executive will accept off island members if we can reasonably determine that they are joining to take part in the club. This usually means they are residing close to Gabriola. Speaking of club activities, Tanya at Silva Bay Pub is preparing a different lunch special for us on our regular informal lunch meetings (second Wednesday each month). Come and join s if you can. Also, remember our monthly meetings at the Haven. Also, the Valentine’s day cruise is approaching! Dour Cunnian
Hi All, TOP Hello everyone, Many thanks to everyone who signed up. Let’s hope the rest of the cruising season will be better! Valentine’s Day event will be next on February 12th at the Lighthouse Pub and Bistro on Nanaimo waterfront. Luckily, we don’t necessarily have to rely on the weather for this! However, some people might want to take their boats and take advantage of the 3 hour courtesy tie-up at Nanaimo Harbour for the brunch, or stay overnight. If you plan on taking your boat there, please call ahead on VHF Ch.67 At the brunch we will have a dozen roses for your sweetheart to the person who can guess the closest number of cinnamon hearts in the jar. So don’t miss out, and also the menu for the Sunday brunch looks really good. Safe and Happy boating,

Next monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday February 7th at the Haven at 7:30 pm. Don't forget the Haven have a buffet dinner that would require a reservation in advance, the BC Cetacean Sightings Network will be giving a presentation. "The multi-media presentations provided by the BCCSN covers the diversity of cetacean and sea turtle species in BC with tips on identification, as well as information on threats and what people can do to help the conservation of these animals. For boating organizations, we specifically highlight the boating guidelines for marine wildlife and provide context as to why the guidelines are important for the animals, and how to best adhere to them. It is a 1 to 1 ½ hour presentation that is interactive and includes video clips, whale vocalizations, slides and take-home materials. "

TOP The term originated in the 18th century, when sailing navies could determine the nationality of a sailing vessel by the shape of their jib, long before her colors could be seen.
