Commodore's Report

I thought we had done an admirable job of appeasing the sailing gods at our Salute the Compass event at Silva Bay Pub on January 2nd.  Apparently not as our Fleet Captain Jill had to first postpone then entirely cancel the Soup Cruise to Pirate’s Cove due to two weekends of nasty weather. Here’s hoping the gods got all that out of their system now and our typical fair sailing weather returns and no more cruises get cancelled.

With the days starting to get noticeably longer, I’m sure many of us are beginning to think about getting back on the boat. While modern gear and equipment has made boating much easier and safer than in the past, there is still a basic skill set that every skipper needs to know. With this in mind, your executive is currently looking at offering a series of on the water refresher short courses on boat handling and safety for this spring. We’ll keep you informed as plans firm up.

Some members have expressed some confusion and uncertainty as to the requirements needed for someone to become a new member of SBYC. The requirements are set out in out bylaws (which you can find at the back of the SBYC log book) which in essence states that preference will be given to new members who reside or have property on Gabriola Island. Anyone else who applies has their application referred to the executive for consideration. We are (by far) the least expensive yacht club in BC to belong to and some people in the past have seen this as a cheap way to get reciprocal moorage at other yacht clubs. That is not in our interest as we are a club and want members who can and will participate in club activities and events and therefore have a stake in our club. The executive will accept off island members if we can reasonably determine that they are joining to take part in the club. This usually means they are residing close to Gabriola.

Speaking of club activities, Tanya at Silva Bay Pub is preparing a different lunch special for us on our regular informal lunch meetings (second Wednesday each month). Come and join s if you can. Also, remember our monthly meetings at the Haven. Also, the Valentine’s day cruise is approaching!

Editor & Past Commodore's News

Hi All,
Don't forget to use this space for any "boating" news you might have or come across. Always looking for news to publish. The great news is that the cold snap is over and looks like a great February to get out on the water. I keep getting emails from the Vancouver Boat Show people, don't forget that this show is taking place February 8th to 12th.

Fleet Captain's Report

Hello everyone,
Well, it has not been a good start to the year weatherwise, and twice we had to cancel the Sizzling Soup cruise due to bad weather , the second time after it had been postponed a week.

Many thanks to everyone who signed up.  Let’s hope the rest of the cruising season will be better!

Valentine’s Day event will be next on February 12th at the Lighthouse Pub and Bistro on Nanaimo waterfront. Luckily, we don’t necessarily have to rely on the weather for this!

However, some people might want to take their boats and take advantage of the 3 hour courtesy tie-up at Nanaimo Harbour for the brunch, or stay overnight. If you plan on taking your boat there, please call ahead on VHF Ch.67

At the brunch we will have a dozen roses for your sweetheart to the person who can guess the closest number of cinnamon hearts in the jar.

So don’t miss out, and also the menu for the Sunday brunch looks really good.

Safe and Happy boating,
Jill Haines
SBYC Fleet Captain

Next General Meeting

Next monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday February 7th at the Haven at 7:30 pm. Don't forget the Haven have a buffet dinner that would require a reservation in advance, the BC Cetacean Sightings Network will be giving a presentation.

"The multi-media presentations provided by the BCCSN covers the diversity of cetacean and sea turtle species in BC with tips on identification, as well as information on threats and what people can do to help the conservation of these animals. For boating organizations, we specifically highlight the boating guidelines for marine wildlife and provide context as to why the guidelines are important for the animals, and how to best adhere to them.  It is a  1 to 1 ½ hour presentation that is interactive and includes video clips, whale vocalizations, slides and take-home materials. "

Orion Flares Recall

Orion Safety Products has issued a recall for two models of its hand-launched aerial signals, citing problems with the devices failing to launch and/or ignite.

The recall applies to older Orion XLT and 12-gauge signals made with orange ABS plastic. XLTs are self-contained, hand-launched signals, while 12-gauge signals have a pistol-style launch and a plastic shell.

In 2008, Orion switched from orange ABS to red-colored, glass-filled polyethylene for its better strength, durability and resistance to moisture. The last XLTs that used orange ABS in the launch tube body expire this month, while the last 12-inch gauge shells using the orange ABS plastic expire in March 2012.

If you have an XLT signal with an orange launch tube that has an expiration date between November 2011 and December 2011, or an orange 12-gauge shell that has an expiration date between November 2011 and March 2012, you are eligible to receive a free, four-pack replacement at no cost.

Here is how to get your replacements.
To return the same types of flares in Canada, an email to Andre Gagnon at CIL with details and a photo is required.  His email is andre.gagnon@cilexplosives.com.  They will ship out replacement signals.

Did you know?
Cut of his Jib

The term originated in the 18th century, when sailing navies could determine the nationality of a sailing vessel by the shape of their jib, long before her colors could be seen.

Power Squadron News

Hello Gabriola Squadron members,

The Gabriola Island Squadron was very active in 2011 and has won numerous awards. It is now time we were recognized on the water as the active squadron we are.

Some years ago, Don Butt designed a flag for the Gabriola Island Squadron, which was accepted by the Squadron and officially approved CPS-ECP Nationally. The flag is used on our letterheads, posters and flyers. The lighthouse on Entrance Island is represented graphically, and the maple leaf from the National flag is the light, emanating rays of boating knowledge as we instruct, out over the waters.

At our Christmas Party in December we had 18 members sign up to pre-purchase the flag at a cost of $20. We would like to presell 40 flags to cover the minimum order of 50 from the manufacturer. We would also like to have the flags on hand for members at the AGM and at the start of the boating season.

Gabriola Island Squadron will be working with VIND  this year to promote the annual VIND Rendezvous to be held on Gabriola Island at Pages Marina on July 27-28-29. The VIND Rendezvous will involve all 10 squadrons from Vancouver Island North District. The  events at the rendezvous will challenge each squadron to show their very best in seamanship, in enthusiasm and in showing each squadrons colours.  It will  It would be a great time to introduce and to fly our own colours. I would like to encourage you to reserve July 27,28 & 29 so you can attend the VIND rendezvous, take part in the activities and show our new colours.

If you have not yet placed your order for a squadron flag, call Douglass at 250-325-7877
