Ian Waymark
Here is how Darrel & Ian came to win this prestigious award.....
Darrel's story
- In US waters, it is forbidden to dump sewage overboard. Darrel and Jill in the Rosa Colletti arrived in Roche Harbour and discover that the “Phecal Phreak” would come and take their sewage. Darrel had never pumped out the Rosa Colletti before. David, in Kelly’s Pride was moored to their starboard. As Darrel loosened the cap on the pump out port, a stream of foul brown spray spewed out all over Kelly’s Pride and David. Apparently, the holding tank of the Rosa Colletti was under pressure (due to a plugged vent)! Once would be understandable, but this happened two more time, each time with Kelly’s Pride the victim. David finally cleaned out the plugged vent to end the geysers.
- The Rosa Colletti, Kelly’s Pride and Shadowfax departed from the rest of the San Juan Island group to go to Spencer’s Spit for some serious crabbing. The crab were plentiful and we soon had three limits. We decided to feast that night aboard Shadowfax, and what a feast it was! Around 10:00 PM, it was time for Darrel, Jill and David to head back to their boats. Shadowfax being a sailboat has a high freeboard and a transom ladder to board from dinghys. Darrel got aboard his dinghy and was trying to start the motor as Jill was descending the ladder to the dinghy. As Jill was just stepping onto the bow of the dinghy, Darrel got the motor started and it jerked away from Shadowfax, depositing Jill in the water. Darrel, shocked to see how much water had entered the dinghy, started madly bailing, forgetting about Jill in the drink. We grabbed Jill and hauled her back aboard Shadowfax. The good news from this is that Jill insisted they get a bigger more stable dinghy, which Darrel has now done.
Ian's story
- While sailing from Montague to Sidney Spit on the first part of the San Juan Islands cruise, Ian and Paddy in Shevasan had a close encounter with a BC Ferry. Entering Moresby Passage east of Portland Island heading south, Ms Betty was to port, Shadowfax to starboard and Shevasan in the centre. Both Ms Betty and Shadowfax noticed the ferry behind us heading to Sidney and we moved aside to make room for its passage. Shevasan moved a little to the port side of the channel but still right in the ferry’s path. Finally, the ferry let go five blasts, which got Ians attention. He responded by steering sharp to starboard right across the ferry’s bow! Shevasan looked very small next to that ferrys bow! As a result, at the next possible opportunity, Ian got and installed a rear view mirror in Shevasan.
- While nicely anchored at Sidney Spit, the crews of Shadowfax and Shevasan boarded Ms Betty for happy hour. Ian, who had arrived later after detouring to the liquor store in Sidney (perhaps due to previous episode described above), was tied to mooring buoy some distance from us. Ian and Paddy stayed with Rick and Betty for supper while Doug and Deb returned to Shadowfax. By late evening, and dark, it was time for Ian and Paddy to return to Shevasan. Rick and Betty retired for the night only to hear sometime later a call from the water beside their boat. Ian and Paddy had returned as Ian couldn’t locate Shavasan and wondered if they might stay the night. Rick gave them a BIG flashlight and they went searching again finally locating Shevasan.
